OHC TourMeeting Mayela was great! She took the time to break down all the services they have to offer, which is amazing in its own! Then we went walking around their complexes. There is something for everyone! It was really refreshing to know that there are so many services out there and people who REALLY care what happens. Unfortunately they are loosing a lot of funding for their programs, like one that hired teachers to teach their clients English or Writing skills. I can't stress how amazing this facility is. They don't turn away any body! By day it's an activity center, dining hall, what ever it needs to be and at night everything is put away and the mats are laid so every one has a place to sleep. Talk about an eye opener. Mayela explained to me how their organization is really hurting, not only are they loosing funding, everyone usually donates around the holidays and they are all dried up! Donations anyone? http://www.homelessopportunitycenter.org/default.aspx A side note... "Stories from the Shelter"Blake called me back! He mentioned that my project sounds like the book he just wrote and made the suggestion for me to meet the people in his book and paint them. Blake has done a lot of amazing things with his organization and I'm glad he's on board to support the arts but I don't think we're on the same page as far as what I want the final art work to be. I do plan to give his book a try but it's important to me to stay true to the Seed of Benevolence's goal, to feature individual life stories. I'm super excited to get this project started! I've done a little research on line as to what facilities I want to check out. There's so much do! Here are the places I checked out... The Rescue Missionhttp://www.rm-ep.org/home.htm I went to the Rescue Mission of El Paso first. When I walked in I remembered my mom taking our girl scout troop there for a tour. We also volunteered there a few times. It was definitely a great reminder to be thankful for what we had. It's ashame it's been so long since I've been back. Unfortunately the guy in charge, Blake, was unavailable but I left my information and look forward to hearing back from him... The Opportunity for the Homelesshttp://www.homelessopportunitycenter.org
The Opportunity Center for the Homeless OCH is amazing! They have so many facilities that cover a wide range of services! They have an emergency unity, and men's and women's facility, a facility for the elder, you name it. I hope to get the opportunity to work with them. I spoke with Mayela who is the Housing Coordinator/Social Services person and really can't wait for her to speak with her co-workers about letting me work with their clients. Wow! The day is finally here! All the work leading up to this day has paid off. What an experience. All the artist I shared this experience with are super talented and I know they will find ways to make their work prevail. Everyone should try put the Caldo Experience as an artist and as a dinner participant. As an artist I learned how to talk and write about work as well as the value of our community. As a spectator, the food is good, the company is diverse, and it feels great to just be part of our rising Art Community. THANK YOU CALDO COLLECTIVE!!!
